Trooper Awarded Medal of Valor

State Trooper Sergeant Chris Kane was awarded a Medal of Valor Sunday at a ceremony at the Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department.

In March of 2011, 92 year old Opal Perry went into the Guyandotte River while operating his backhoe. Despite having water rescue training or equiptment Trooper Sergeant Kane, as well as Gilbert Firefighters Charles Scott, Rodney Harrison, and Alan Toler, risked their lives trying to save him. Though they were unsuccesful their courage has been reckognized.

Mingo County is currently trying to pass a levy to get firefighters across the county the proper training and equiptment which, Gilbert Firefighter Alan Toler says could have possibly saved Opal Perry's life.
