- Must be at least 18 years old and no older than 39 on the day of enlistment
- A United States Citizen
- Possess a valid driver's license
- Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must pass the written examination and physical agility test
The Superintendent and/or Cadet Selection Board Shall reject an applicant for the following or other conditions or circumstances.
- The applicant fails to meet the requirements listed under minimum requirements
- The applicant has been convicted of a Felony
- The applicant has been previously dismissed from any public service for delinquency, misconduct, or other similar causes
- The applicant has made a false statement of material face or has misrepresented his or her qualifications in the application or background investigation
- The applicant has used or attempted to use political pressure or bribery to secure an advantage in the selection process
- The applicant has failed to submit the application correctly or within the prescribed time limits
- The applicant has any convictions for a serious traffic offense {DUI, Negligent Homicide, etc .. )
- The West Virginia State Police detects or discerns any condition or circumstance involving the applicant that may grossly impair the applicant's ability to perform the duties of a West Virginia State Trooper
- The applicant has been rejected during any phase of a previous selection process and the condition or circumstance causing the rejection still exists
- The applicant has any convictions for misdemeanor crimes involving persons or property
- Cadets in training will receive $53,724.00 ($4,477.00 per month)
- Upon graduation from the academy salary will increase to $60,984.00 ($5,082.00 per month)
- Troopers receive a salary increase with each promotion and a $500 yearly longevity salary increase
- Troopers have available health, dental and vision coverage
- Troopers earn 15-24 paid vacation days a year depending on longevity
- All troopers earn 1.5 sick days a month
- All Troopers are part of the
West Virginia State Police Plan B retirement system.
